Holy Heartbreaks: God’s Direction in Our Disappointment

“It takes faith to see God’s direction resting at the center of our disappointment. That’s what I call a Holy Heartbreak. It’s the difference between perceiving a season was wasted and knowing God’s doesn’t waste any season, especially my most painful ones.”

‘What’s are holy heartbreaks, and what does God’s direction got to do with it?’ A heartbreak is holy when our faith enables us to see God’s direction, provision, and love right in the middle of what looks to be an impossible situation. A heartbreak is holy when I see past the pain and instead, see God’s promise.

Life can sometimes feel like a series of closed doors, betrayals, and unexpected setbacks. Some of these unfortunate events are what I like to call Holy Heartbreaks because I’ve seen God use every one of mine to point me in a divine direction. We’ve all been there, feeling like we’re wandering through a maze with no clear way out. Maybe you’re in a ‘when it rains, it pours’ kind of season. While I don’t know you’re exact circumstances, I do have experience in facing life’s challenges. A question worth considering when faced with a difficult circumstance or disappointment is: What if these disappointments aren’t just surprise troubles raining on your parade—but part of a much greater plan?

Holy Heartbreaks: The Unexpected Gift of God’s Direction in Our Disappointment

Jesus faced immense disappointment and betrayal. From being rejected by those he came to save to the ultimate betrayal by Judas, His path was filled with heartbreak. Yet, these very experiences led Him to the cross, where He achieved the greatest act of love and salvation for humanity. What really get me, is that unlike you and I, Jesus had the authority and power to stop any number of those terrible events from happening, and He didn’t. What then, does that mean for me and you? I don’t have a great answer but it’s something I find myself thinking about a lot lately, as my family endures our own difficult season.

It took a while to accept the season we’re in. Early on, I spent a lot of time journaling and catching sermons from some of my most favorite and trusted Bible teachers. Actually, prayer was really hard at first. The disappointment I felt had been with me since I was a child, and to add another brick onto the pile, well, I just couldn’t accept it. It’s one of the very first times I’ve ever questioned God’s care and love for my life. But after a few months, I remembered that a love story, in its essence, requires a journey through disappointment. How can we truly understand the depth of God’s love without experiencing trouble? We can’t be rescued if we don’t need rescuing.

There is Purpose in Your Holy Heartbreaks: God’s Direction Points Us to Him

“For me, it’s not the closing of doors that disappoint me. It’s the opening of ones I didn’t ask to be opened.”

But what if that closed door is God’s way of redirecting us to something far greater? Disappointments often push us out of our comfort zones and lead us to places we never imagined. They force us to rely on God and seek His guidance more earnestly.

Consider Joseph’s story in the Bible. Sold into slavery by his own brothers and wrongfully imprisoned, it seemed like his life was over. But each disappointment was a stepping stone that led him to become a ruler in Egypt, saving countless lives, including his own family.

By Faith, God Will Repurpose Your Greatest Disappointments, Using Each One to Point You in His Direction

In our own lives, disappointments can be God’s way of clearing out the clutter, untangling the mess, and setting us on a new path. It’s in those moments of heartbreak and confusion that we often find clarity and direction.

Just as a sculptor chisels away at a block of marble, God uses our struggles to shape and refine us into the people He wants us to be. The process may be painful, but the end result is a masterpiece.
